Mother of compilers
Today,
programming is fundamental to our lives. It helps us solve life's problems
quickly and with accurate results. However, it didn't go away at all from
birth.
It was
quite interesting to read about the origins of programming. And to know that it
was a woman who dedicated herself to that. I had never read about Grace Hopper,
but I like that in the article it talks about her life. It tells us about how
she was as a child, her interests, her studies and her first works.
Her first
advances and works related to programming may seem very little compared to what
we have today, but for that time, and especially in a time of war, was quite
good and very useful, since before all calculations were done manually, since
mathematics was an indispensable tool, because they were in the middle of the
Second World War.
And,
besides, something that I liked very much was that it talked about his first
compilers, the A-0 for example, and how they served, sometime later he improved
it and developed better compilers, until he reached his best known development,
the compiler for COBOL.
Everything
read in the article was very helpful, but at the time of seeing the documentary
"THE QUEEN OF CODE" was better to understand it completely. I was
surprised when in the documentary they showed some videos of Grace Hopper,
speaking in public. In the documentary you can see that the people who talk
about her admire her too much for her great contributions to the programming. I
liked the images that can be seen in this video, because you can see images
about how computers used to be, of great size. With this I can get an idea of
how complicated it could be to program something to solve a problem. However,
all that has been improving until we get to what we have now.
